A major disadvantage of the agency as a field practicum is that it may portray a negative image in the corporate earnings of various careers since as anon-profit making organization, YMCA GTA may not be offering benefits to the tune of other companies and institutions.

Question 1

Broad African Resource Centre (BARC) is nonprofit making, non-governmental organization or else a community agency whose key roles or mandate is empowering the society paying a special focus on the plight of immigrants in Canada. BARC was established in Canada with the aim of responding to economic, educational and social needs of new immigrant families and young people in GTA/Greater Toronto Area. Some of the major activities that BARC is committed to including youth empowerment, public education, capacity building, and development of various programs aimed at countering social issues affecting immigrants and building/representing positive image via audio-visual education. Meanwhile, BARC has been instrumental in fighting for the inclusion of immigrants in the development of public policy. Furthermore, BARC has been able to mobilize immigrants as well as youths in Canada as well as Diaspora in other nations, to be active in influencing the development of public policy by participating in government policy planning up to the implementation of these policies.

Question 2

The key disadvantage of BARC as a possible field of field practicum is that BARC do not offer a wide range of opportunities in employment and students may feel as if there is less going on into the agency with respect to their expectations.

COSTI Immigrant Services

Question 1

COSTI Immigrant services is a community agency that provides educational, employment, settlement and social services to the immigrants of Canada and also other people who are in need of their services in the community. COSTI agency uses a client-focused and innovative approach in developing and delivering its services to its clients. The agency ensures that the immigrants of Canada get to use their skills appropriately in the new country and also learn new skills regardless of their language barrier. Therefore, COSTI has a mandate of identifying issues affecting immigrants and addressing them. They also inform public policymakers and the community about the issues affecting the immigrants.

Question 2

COSTI agency has some career opportunities which are open to applicants. The career opportunities include Family Crisis Support Workers, Senior Administrator and Arabic Speaking Support Workers. The basic qualifications of COSTI’s jobs involve a long-term career in business management, commercial approaches towards solving problems, individuals who are well networked with other developing organizations, good communication skills, and computer literates. For example, the post of a Family Crisis Support Worker requirements include that one should be a social service worker with educational testimonials such as diploma certificates, Should have one year of experience of working with refugees or victims of violence, fluency of languages such as Arabic, French and others, excellent communication and coordination skills, computer skill knowledge among others. Additionally, the qualifications of the post of Arabic support workers includes one year of counseling experience to refugees or victims of violence, a holder of social services diploma, excellent communication and coordination skills, be computer literate and one who is comfortable with traveling to different areas.

Question 3

COSTI agency serves children and the youths, refugees and the immigrants of Canada.

Question 4

The population served come to COSTI agency with the aim of acquiring assistance which makes them succeed in life. For instance, the children and the youths are offered some courses which enlighten them of the things that employers look for whenever they are hiring individuals. The refugees seek assistance from COSTI agency for them to be able to lead comfortable lives in their new environs. There are also housing, problem gambling, language training, family and mental health, children and youth programs, citizenship, skills training and employment. Psychosocial rehabilitation involves counseling and advising of people who may be drug addicts. These may include the youths undergoing some training that educates them about the effects of drugs.

Question 5

SSW roles refer to the responsibilities of different social workers in COSTI agency. In COSTI agency, social workers may include counselors, nurses and crisis support workers among others. The counselors facilitate counseling to the victims of violence or refugees. The nurses, on the other hand, offer medical and health care to refugees or victims who are in need of medical services. Crisis support workers manage the refugees and other violence victims. All these social workers aim at success and comfort of the immigrants in Canada.

Question 6

Sub question I

COSTI agency may act as a field practicum for different students as there are learning opportunities in the agency. There are short courses offered to youths focusing on how they can maintain a job in their future. These courses point out some of the things that employers look for during hiring. Therefore for a student who attends this training, he or she will learn more skills of how to seek for employment. The agency trains the youth on customer service preparation. The students are taught how to deal with difficult problems and clients, how to represent their companies and improve their listening skills. Therefore, with all these services and programs offered at the agency, it fit to be a field practicum for students.

Sun question II

Nevertheless, COSTI agency may not be a preferable field practicum in my studies as it has several disadvantages towards my studies. The disadvantage is because COSTI agency mostly deals with issues affecting immigrants. Therefore for a student who may not be studying social services courses may not benefit from it.
